Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is more than just a salary or an hourly wage. In fact, it is all the rewards an employee earns in return for their labour including direct financial rewards (for example: cash or cash equivalents), indirect financial rewards (for example: benefits and retirement savings contributions), and non‐ financial rewards (for example: work conditions or professional development and training opportunities).

Your organization should strive to create and implement a fair compensation plan that is competitive and fosters high performance in your employees. Although salaries are an important consideration for staff engagement and retention, other rewards such as vacation time, flexible work schedules or benefits can play an important role in keeping your top performers happy and engaged.

In 2008, ONESTEP conducted a compensation survey for twelve key job positions typically found in not-for-profit community based employment and training agencies. As part of this initiative, ONESTEP also developed a resource guide with practical information on compensation considerations and best practices.

In the fall of 2009, ONESTEP engaged Associum Consultants to update the member compensation survey and include a new section on benefits.
